The short answer

The EON Sphere and EON R are the same 2026 Phonak hearing aid with one difference: the Sphere has a second processor whose only job is pulling voices out of background noise. Phonak measures the benefit at up to 10.2 dB on the Sphere E90. If you regularly struggle in restaurants, pubs and family gatherings, that chip is worth the extra £170–£250 a pair. If your days are mostly quiet or moderately busy, the EON R hears the same and the saving is real. Until 31 October 2026, a Sphere pair also comes with the £369.95 portable charger free.

Start with what is the same

It is easier to choose between these two once you see how much they share. Both are built on Phonak’s 2026 EON platform. Both have the new body that is 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the previous Sphere. Both quote up to 38 hours from the same rechargeable battery and come with the same standard desktop charger. Both have universal Bluetooth Classic plus LE Audio, so they connect to any phone without a streamer, stream to both ears, take hands-free calls and are Auracast-ready. Both run on the myPhonak app, support Roger microphones and the TV Connector, are rated IP68, come in the same eight colours, and carry the same 5-year warranty from us. Neither has a telecoil.

Both also use AutoSense OS AI 8.0, Phonak’s automatic program that classifies the room you are in and adjusts without you touching anything. That is the “AI” in the EON R’s name, and it is good — it is the same engine that made the Lumity and Infinio aids so popular. The Sphere has it too.

The one thing that is different

The Sphere adds a second processor, the HYPERSONIC AI chip, running a deep neural network called Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0. It does one job: when a room gets loud, it identifies the voices around you — from any direction — and rebuilds them cleanly on top of the background rather than simply turning the noise down. Phonak measures the result at up to 10.2 dB of signal-to-noise improvement on the E90, 8 dB on the E70 and 7 dB on the E50.

That number needs translating. In the kind of noise most people struggle in, every extra decibel is worth roughly 8–10% more words understood. So in a busy restaurant, the Sphere is not slightly better than the EON R; it is the difference between a room you can cope with for twenty minutes and one you can stay in all evening. In a quiet kitchen, a one-to-one chat or a normal office, the chip is idle and the two aids are, for practical purposes, the same hearing aid.

Until 31 October 2026: every pair of EON Sphere ordered from Aid My Hearing comes with the Phonak portable charger (normally £369.95) in place of the standard desktop charger, at no extra cost. It is added to your basket automatically when you choose “both ears”.

The other cost is battery. Both aids quote 38 hours, but the Sphere’s chip draws extra power whenever its Spheric mode is running. Someone who spends all day in loud places with the Sphere can land nearer 22 hours; the EON R, with no second processor to feed, stays much closer to the headline figure. Neither will leave you short before bedtime, but if you hate charging, that is a point to the EON R.

A simple way to decide

Think about the last month and count the occasions you really struggled to follow conversation. Then ask where they happened.

  • Mostly in loud places — restaurants, pubs, family gatherings, a noisy office, the school gate: the Sphere chip is built for exactly this, and it is worth the extra. Go for the Sphere E90 if those occasions are weekly, the E70 if they are a few times a month.
  • Mostly soft or distant voices in quiet rooms — a quietly spoken partner, the television, meetings where the speaker is across the table: that is not a noise problem, and the EON R E90’s Speech Enhancer and SpeechSensor address it directly, for £175 less than the Sphere E90.
  • A bit of everything, nothing extreme — the honest answer for most people: the EON R E70 at £2,055 gives you StereoZoom 2.0 and Dynamic Noise Cancellation for the occasional busy room, and you keep £370 compared with the Sphere E90.
  • Mostly at home, first hearing aid — the EON R E30 at £1,615 gets you the 2026 body, battery and Bluetooth without paying for tools you will not use.
Choose the EON Sphere if…
  • Noisy places are where you struggle most, and it happens most weeks
  • You want the aids to handle noise automatically (E90 and E70) so you never reach for your phone
  • You are buying a pair before 31 October 2026 and would value the free £369.95 portable charger

Choose the EON R if…
  • Your days are mostly quiet or moderately busy
  • Soft or distant voices, not background noise, are the real problem (E90)
  • You want the longest real-world battery and the lowest price for the 2026 Phonak platform

The trap to avoid: comparing across levels

A common question is whether the EON R E90 (£2,250) beats the Sphere E50 (£2,140), because the prices are close. They solve different problems. The EON R E90 gives you Phonak’s complete set of conventional speech tools — Speech Enhancer for soft voices, SpeechSensor for voices from the side and behind, StereoZoom 2.0 for the person in front — with 20 fine-tuning channels. The Sphere E50 gives you the AI noise chip at its entry level: 7 dB of benefit, switched on by you in the app, with 16 channels and without those E90 tools. If loud rooms are the enemy, take the Sphere E50. If soft voices, groups and the finest tuning matter more, take the EON R E90. If you are torn, ask us — it is a ten-minute conversation.

Our verdict

For most people, the EON R E70 is the right Phonak in 2026 — it does everything the platform is good at and leaves the AI premium on the table. For anyone whose hardest hours are spent in noise, the EON Sphere E90 is the strongest tool on the market and the extra £175 is well spent; while the free portable charger offer runs, the gap effectively disappears. Both are programmed to your own hearing test by our audiologist, come with a 5-year warranty and a 60-day money-back trial, and if the first choice turns out to be wrong, we will swap it within the 60-day trial.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Phonak EON R and EON Sphere?

The body, battery, Bluetooth, Auracast, app, water rating and warranty are identical. The Sphere adds a second processor — the HYPERSONIC AI chip — whose only job is separating voices from background noise, with a benefit Phonak measures at up to 10.2 dB on the E90. The EON R relies on Phonak’s AutoSense OS AI 8.0 automatic processing instead. In quiet and moderately busy places they hear much the same; in loud rooms the Sphere is clearly better.

How much more does the EON Sphere cost than the EON R?

At Aid My Hearing a pair of EON Sphere costs £175 more than the EON R at E90 level, £250 more at E70 and £170 more at E50 (October 2026). Until 31 October 2026 a Sphere pair also includes the £369.95 portable charger free, which more than closes the gap if you wanted that charger anyway.

Is the EON Sphere worth it over the EON R?

It is worth it if you regularly struggle in loud places — restaurants, pubs, family gatherings, open-plan offices — and that is the problem you most want solved. It is not worth it if your days are mostly quiet or moderately busy, because in those settings the EON R hears the same. Send us your audiogram and tell us about a typical week, and we will say which we would choose for you.

Is the EON R E90 better than the EON Sphere E50?

They are different trade-offs at a similar price — the EON R E90 is £2,250 a pair and the Sphere E50 is £2,140. The EON R E90 gives you Phonak’s full set of conventional speech tools (Speech Enhancer, SpeechSensor, StereoZoom 2.0) and 20 tuning channels; the Sphere E50 gives you the AI noise chip at its entry level (7 dB benefit, switched on by you in the app) with 16 channels. If loud rooms are the problem, the Sphere E50; if soft voices, groups and fine-tuning matter more, the EON R E90.

Do the EON R and EON Sphere use the same charger and accessories?

Yes. Both come with the standard desktop charger (Charger RIC E) in the box, and both work with the optional portable charger, the TV Connector, Roger microphones and the myPhonak app. Receivers and domes are shared too, so your audiologist fits either in exactly the same way.

Does either the EON R or EON Sphere have a telecoil?

No — neither does. Phonak has removed the telecoil from the whole EON platform. If hearing loops matter to you, the Signia Pure Charge&Go MaX keeps one.

Which has the better battery life?

Both are quoted at up to 38 hours without streaming. In practice the EON R stays closer to that figure, because the Sphere’s AI chip draws extra power whenever its Spheric mode is running — a heavy day in noisy places on the Sphere can land nearer 22 hours. Either way, both comfortably cover a day and a late evening.
